IV "... hommage..."Kaori Nishii, pianocomposed by Bernhard Philipp EderI originally composed "collections" for piano solo to participate at the Mauricio Kagel composition competition 2012, which had the task to write a roughly 10 minute long piano piece suitable for young students to introduce them to contemporary music and extended playing techniques (playing inside the piano, dampening strings with the hands, using mallets/jazz brushes/ping pong balls, etc.). My composition was eventually not selected for the competition, and it laid in my proverbial drawer for a couple of years. Finally, in 2018, thanks to Ambitus-Gruppe für Neue Musik, my piece could be world premiered by the wonderful and amazing Kaori Nishii, who also teaches at the University of Music & Performing Arts Vienna and is an expert in contemporary repertoire. Therefore possible hickups in regards of intonation or other things do not mean that the final audio product (with several other takes to choose from) will sound anything similar. ;-) This video is part of a series solely produced for a DVD which was included in my master thesis paper "Dirigieren in einer Aufnahme - Die unterschiedlichen Anforderungen" ("Conducting in a recording - The different requirements"). NOTE: Katrin Targo suffered from a heavy cold at the time of recording, and still her performance was marvelous :-)

In her honour and memory I arranged this traditional Carinthian Folksong (she was originally from Klagenfurt) for my mother's memorial service, both because she was an absolute passionate music lover herself (she played piano, sang in choirs, was engaged in countless music and arts supporting functions etc.), and also because of her connection and roots with her homestate. I myself am not a religious person at all, but I found it important to pay a proper tribute to her legacy. The orchestra and recording venue was organised by me, as well as the preparation of the orchestral material. A big thanks again to all musicians who participated in this :-) The final audio product of course differs a lot from what can be heard in this video, as this was just one of several takes through the course of the recording session and not specially mixed for this video. Therefore possible hickups in regards of intonation or other things do not mean that the final audio product (with several other takes to choose from) will sound anything similar. ;-) This video is part of a series solely produced for a DVD which was included in my master thesis paper "Dirigieren in einer Aufnahme - Die unterschiedlichen Anforderungen" ("Conducting in a recording - The different requirements"). Ein paar Jahre zuvor, es war noch während meiner Schulzeit am Musikgymnasium Wien, schrieb ich bereits einmal ein kürzeres (Jugend-)Werk für diese Besetzung. Die ursprüngliche Idee war es, ein 3-sätziges Streichquartett zu schaffen, wo jeder Satz eine andere ästhetische musikalische Entwicklung der letzten 100 Jahre in dieser Gattung reflektieren und ich diese mit meiner – natürlich noch am Anfang seiner eigenen Entwicklung stehenden – eigenen Kompositionssprache zu verbinden. Besondere Inspirationen und Einflüsse waren damals ganz besonders die Streichquartette von Berg, Ravel, Schnittke und Lutoslawski. Jedoch sollte kein einziger dieser Sätze eine reine Stilübung sein, sondern auch eine für mich als damals 21-jährigen neue Reise in andere Klangwelten, die sich von meiner bisherigen Art zu komponieren, unterscheiden würden. Gerade in Anbetracht der vielen bahnbrechenden Werke, die sich für diese Königsdisziplin der Kammermusik über Generationen durchgesetzt haben, war dieses Unterfangen für mich alles andere als einfach. Im Rahmen meines Kompositionsunterrichts entstanden somit in meinem ersten Studienjahr der erste Satz, welcher am 3.Mai 2006 bei einem Kompositionsklassenabend uraufgeführt wurde, sowie ein halbes Jahr später der zweite Satz. Zwar begann ich auch mit der ausgiebigeren Skizzierung eines dritten Satzes, schloss diesen jedoch aus diversen Gründen nicht ab, da ich zu keinem für mich zufriedenstellenden kompositorischen Ergebnis kommen konnte. Seitdem ruhte dieses bis dato unvollendete Werk und ich widmete mich anderen Kompositionen, Projekten sowie meinem Dirigierstudium. Insofern war und ist es für mich nun eine sehr spannende Idee, auf Initiative des wunderbaren Tartini-Quartetts, mich nun über 10 Jahre später – ich bin ja inzwischen ein völlig anderer Komponist, Künstler und letztendlich natürlich anderer Mensch geworden – wieder mit diesem Frühwerk von mir intensiv zu beschäftigen und dem Stück nun doch im Zuge einer Überarbeitung einen Abschluss geben zu können. Zwar war ich doch in der Versuchung, vieles in den ersten beiden Sätzen meinen heutigen stilististischen Kompositionsweisen anzupassen, jedoch habe ich mich dann nur darauf beschränkt, ein paar Straffungen sowie formale Optimierungen vorzunehmen, ohne die eigentliche Essenz der ursprünglichen Kompositionen zu sehr von ihrer ursprünglichen und auf freitonaler Klangästhetik aufgebauten Form zu verändern. Auch der nun neu geschrieben 3.Satz soll sich nun in diese „jüngere“ Klangwelt einfügen, damit sich der Kreis dieses Werks letztendlich nach 10 Jahren endgültig schließen kann. Nach dieser Auseinandersetzung mit meiner kompositorischen Vergangenheit und „Jugend“ freue ich mich nun auf zukünftige, weitere Abenteuer in der Welt der Musik für Streichquartette.
